AI Logo Design

Generation gets you a candidate, not a logo. What separates the two is whether the mark still works at sixteen pixels, whether it holds in a single colour, and whether the lettering beside it was set rather than produced. That last part is where most generated identities fall down.

How I use it

  1. Wee Rock Art — a mark that survives at favicon size

The pebble mark had to carry the identity at full size and still read in a browser tab. Generated marks routinely carry detail that turns to mud below about thirty pixels, and it only becomes obvious once the favicon is sitting in front of you.

  2. Throughline — a single continuous stroke

One unbroken stroke carrying the brand’s whole idea. Getting a generated curve to read as deliberate rather than merely output is the difference between a logo and a shape that happens to be nearby.

  3. Type is where generated identities fail

Generated lettering is usually almost right, which is worse than obviously wrong — the eye catches it without being able to say why. The answer is setting the wordmark in a real typeface against the mark rather than regenerating and hoping for a better draw.
